Coffee may prevent skin cancer

Consumption of caffeine every day it can reduce our risk of developing skin cancer, a study mentioned.

"Our study suggests that coffee consumption may be an important option to help prevent basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer)," explains lead researcher Fengju Song, a postdoctoral fellow in the department of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, AS.Untuk this study, scientists collecting data on almost 113,000 adults. For over 20 years of follow-up, more than 25,000 cases of skin cancer diagnosed among men and women in this study. Of these, about 23,000 are basal cell carcinoma, about 2,000 are squamous cell cancers and 741 melanomas.

The researchers found that women who drank more than three cups of coffee a day had 20 percent lower risk of developing basal cell carcinoma compared with women who drank less than one cup of coffee in a month.

For men, the risk was 9 percent lower for those who drank three cups a day compared with those who drank less than one cup per month.

"Nevertheless, additional studies to explore the mechanisms behind this association is necessary" explains Song.

While previous studies conducted in mice found that caffeine helps reduce the development of squamous cell carcinoma by eliminating cells damaged by ultraviolet radiation.
